Weather experts are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Continue Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the weather service.

Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. Readings are forecast to be cold, meaning extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Activated

At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather could to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
